If We Are Faithful

Many years ago the owner of a successful hardware store was thinking about slowing down and decided to look for a reliable young man who would be interested in learning the hardware business.

He had several good men working for him, but since none of them seemed interested in anything more than a regular paycheck he posted a help wanted ad in the store window.

Of the dozen or so who applied for the job the owner hired two who seemed the most promising. Both came from good families, both were well liked around town, and both had good reputations.

The pay was good. but instead of starting them out in the office, or even as clerks, he took them upstairs and showed them several boxes that held an assortment of nuts, bolts, washers, screws, and nails of all different sizes.

Then he told the boys to separate the different items and place each kind and size in smaller boxes. As he turned to go back downstairs to his office he said, “I don’t know how long it will take, just stick to it till the job is finished.”

Around lunch time the second day Bob remarked that he didn’t care how good the pay was, he didn’t intend to spend his days sorting out old nuts, bolts, and nails. And he went down to tell the owner he was going to look for another job.

Even though it didn’t make a lot of sense to Glen either he just smiled and kept on sorting. Near the end of the week, as he was finishing up he discovered five silver dollars at the bottom of the last box.

After putting everything in order Glen took the silver dollars and headed for the office and handed them to the owner. Only then did the owner reveal that he was looking for someone to learn the business, and offered Glen the job.

God is seeking those who are willing to do as He asks even though some of the things may not make a lot sense to our way of thinking. But God will honor those who are faithful to Him. And the rewards of being faithful servants are far greater that anything we can ever gain by doing things our own way.

“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Matthew 25:21 (KJV)
